Grade 10 Academic Math
(MPM2D)


This course enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.
Prerequisite: MPM1D
The Term work will be worth 70% . The methods of evaluation will include tests, quizzes, and in class tasks.

The topics to be studied and evaluated in this course are:

  • Analytic Geometry
    • model and solve problems involving the intersection of two straight lines;
    • solve problems using analytic geometry involving properties of lines and line segments;
    • verify geometric properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, using analytic geometry.

  • Quadratic Relations of the form
    • determine the basic properties of quadratic relations;
    • relate transformations of the graph of y = x2 to the algebraic representation y = a(x – h)2 +k;
    • solve quadratic equations and interpret the solutions with respect to the corresponding relations;
    • solve problems involving quadratic relations.

  • Trigonometry
    • use their knowledge of ratio and proportion to investigate similar triangles and solve problems related to similarity;
    • solve problems involving right triangles, using the primary trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem;
    • solve problems involving acute triangles, using the sine law and the cosine law.

The Final Evaluation will be worth 30% of the course.

Required materials

All students are required to have a scientific calculator, pencils, pens, an eraser, paper, graph paper, and a ruler for each class. Borrowing from other students in class during tests, exams, and quizzes is not permitted. Please come to class prepared.

Textbook cost


The textbook for this course costs $85. A textbook will be loaned to you. If you lose or damage the textbook you will be required to pay for it.

Quadratics Problem 1

Liam bounces a Super Ball off of the top of the roof of a 22 m high building. At 5 seconds after Liam bounces the ball, Kayla, in another building, notices that the ball has reached a maximum height of 72 m just outside her window. If the path of the ball can be modeled by a quadratic function then determine when the ball will hit the ground?
Quadratics Problem 2


A scared ant notices a frog hopping towards him. The frog lands 1 cm to the left of him and hops over him. At 0.2 s the frog is 22 cm directly above him. If the frog lands 11 cm to the right of the ant and the frog’s path can be modeled by a quadratic function then determine the frog’s maximum height and when it reaches that height.
